Want to live past 100? Feel your optimum health for years to come? Sound too good to be true? Think again! There are multiple places throughout the world that have been closely studied for their centenarians, who live past 100 years of age, for common lifestyle habits that could contribute to their longevity. The areas that were studied are called the Blue Zones, people here reach 100 years of age at ten times the rate than other places in the world.

Locations noted for their centenarians:
  • Ikaria, Greece
  • Sardinia, Italy
  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Loma Linda, California
  • Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
Nutrient Dense Delights

Choose a plant based diet rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Whole grains have been shown to decrease many health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and stroke. Fruit are packed with phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals that are essential to health. According to the CDC only 9% of Americans reach the recommended intake for vegetables! Don’t miss out on these nutrient packed goodies.

Everyday Activity

Across the board, the inhabitants of these areas have incorporated moderate exercise into their daily routines. By walking more, taking the stairs, and stretching your legs for some fresh air, you too can live the centennial lifestyle. They have been found to be active throughout the day and do not remain sitting for long periods. Grab a friend or family member and catch up with on a leisurely hike at the end of the day instead of hitting the couch.

Hit the Snooze Button

It may seem like a mundane thing to get more sleep but those Zs can affect your mental, physical, emotional, and metabolic health! The recommended amount is 7-8 hours for adults. The iPhone even comes equipped with a sleep tracker to help you keep track! Lack of sleep can also alter your hormone levels and affect your ability to regulate your weight which can also increase your risk for developing chronic diseases.

Vino

Consistency and moderation is key not only in the case of exercise and diet but also with drinking as well. Red wine has be touted for its health benefits when enjoyed in moderation (one glass per day for women and two for men).

Share the Experience!

What good is living to 100 if you don’t get to share the journey with others? Being close with friends and family has been linked to longevity. Grab a glass of wine and enjoy a good time with those who bring your up. Strong social ties can help to support healthy habits, decrease stress, help you cope with tough times, improve your mood, and boost your sense of purpose.

Take Time

Faith has been suggested to improve longevity. If you are not religious, practicing meditation to help clear your mind and emphasize your purpose in life is a good practice as well.
